From 2–6 September 2024, IDFA had the privilege of attending the ASCIA (Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy) Conference in Adelaide. Our booth, positioned between AusPIPS Inc. and IDFNZ, allowed us to connect with healthcare professionals eager to learn more about immunodeficiencies and how they can better support patients.
One of the standout moments of the conference occurred on Thursday afternoon when one of our member families shared their powerful story during the Optimising Growth, Nutrition, and Wellbeing in Inborn Errors of Immunity symposium on Nurses Day. Their account resonated deeply with attendees, offering unique insights into the challenges and triumphs of living with immunodeficiency. They were also featured in the Q&A session, where they addressed questions from delegates.
Also on Nurses Day, IDFA CEO Carolyn Dews delivered an insightful presentation on the impactful collaboration between IDFA and AusPIPS Inc. Her talk emphasised how working together strengthens the support available for individuals living with immunodeficiencies.
Throughout the week, we were fortunate to hear from several experts in the field. Dr. Melanie Wong presented her involvement in SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency) and Newborn Screening, highlighting the significant impact this screening can have on Australian families.
Another exciting moment was our meeting with Jan Belcher, CNC from Newcastle, to discuss a planned collaborative event in November. This event will focus on supporting individuals with immunodeficiencies in the Newcastle area and further building our community ties.
On Friday, the Symposium on Inborn Errors of Immunity featured Professor Stu Tangye, who spoke highly of his work with IDFA. Later in the day, Dr. Melanie Wong and Javeria Ahmad participated in a Fireside Chat Panel Discussion on Newborn Screening for Inborn Errors of Immunity, underscoring the importance of early detection.
The conference also included the Transition from Paediatric to Adult Allergy and Immunology Symposium, where Dr. Alisa Kane presented the Transition project, which included contributions from IDFA’s YAMs (Young Adult Members) program. This project focuses on ensuring smooth transitions for young people moving from paediatric to adult healthcare services.
Carolyn Dews, IDFA CEO, and Geraldine Dunne, IDFA Board Chair, and Board members Dr. Alisa Kane and Dr. Melanie Wong had the privilege of attending the ASCIA Gala Dinner at Adelaide Zoo, where they networked with fellow attendees and further strengthened connections within the immunology and allergy community.
The conversations, collaborations, and knowledge shared at ASCIA 2024 have been invaluable, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s conference as we continue to advocate for and support those living with immunodeficiency.
